Jaiveer Shergill is a young practicing lawyer in the Supreme Court of India and the youngest National Media Panelist of the Indian National Congress. A budding youth icon, he is also one of the youngest spokespersons of the Congress Party for Punjab (Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee) besides being the youngest person to be appointed as the Co-Chairman of the Congress Legal Cell for Punjab. He has also served as the Young India Representative for the International Bar Association; the most prestigious body for lawyers the world over, for a period of two years.
PERSONAL LIFE & EDUCATION
Jaiveer Shergill was born in Jalandhar, Punjab to Rajeshwar Singh Gill (a leading lawyer with specialization in Money Laundering Law) and Karamjeet Shergill. Jaiveer completed his education from St Josephs Boys School and APJ School Jalandhar. Pursuant to school, Jaiveer graduated from one of the Premier Law Schools of the Country- the National University of Juridical Sciences (Kolkata) in the year 2006. During his stint at the law school, Jaiveer participated in academics as well as various extracurricular activities and also served as the President of the Student Union after being elected to the post. Apart from taking various initiatives as a leader of the Student Union, he took it upon himself to impart education to a section of the university staff and make them proficient in the English language to help them keep pace at an international level.
Jaiveer holds a master’s degree in law (LLM) from Berkeley Law School, University of California, USA. . Other than being an avid golf and tennis player, Jaiveer holds a Private Pilot License with more than 150 hours of flying experience.
He is married to Divyata Shergill, who is working in one of the top law firms of India called AZB & Partners.
Jaiveer Shergill enrolled in the Delhi Bar Counsel in the year 2006 when he started his career as a law associate with a leading law firm called Economic Laws Practice. Later in the year 2008, Jaiveer got associated with Chamber of Dr. Abhishek Singhvi, Senior Advocate, Member Parliament, Rajya Sabha. As a practicing advocate at the Supreme Court of India, this young lawyer has been associated with various high profile and sensitive cases like the Vodafone Tax Case (highest tax liability of 2.2 billion USD), petition challenging the imposition of service tax on rental of immovable properties and controversial dispute with respect to offering prayers at a reputed religious site. Lately Jaiveer represented a new airline venture in the Supreme Court as well as High Court in a petition challenging the entry of foreign airlines into India. Apart from having a dedicated pan-world client base including countries India, Dubai, Australia and USA, Jaiveer has received kudos from the lawyer fraternity after receiving compliments for his arguing skills on two particular occasions from the then Chief Justice of India Shri S.K.Kapadia and the then Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Justice Sekhri in the open court.
Currently Jaiveer is very active serving as the National Media Panelist for the Indian National Congress Party, Spokesperson of the Punjab Pradesh Congress and Co-Chairman of the Legal Cell, Congress (Punjab). As a unique initiative, Jaiveer launched a 24 x7 legal toll-free helpline number to provide legal assistance to congress workers who are victims of political vendetta and facing false cases slapped by the Akali-BJP Government in Punjab. He has also been instrumental in voicing various economic and social issues in the media including but not limited to foreign direct investment, depleted conditions of schools in Punjab, alarming drug use, women safety during his numerous appearances in TV debates on all elite national news channels.
