JALANDHAR: The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee’s legal cell has criticized the recent formation of the panel by Punjab chief minister to suggest amendment to criminal laws for protection of women against heinous crimes by terming it as an eye-wash as no young lawyer or woman activist has been taken in it to get perspective of the young population.
Even as Punjab government has constituted a panel headed by former Kerala high court chief justice V K Bali along with two other former judges of Punjab and Haryana high court, yet co-chairman of the legal cell and Supreme Court advocate Jaiveer Shergill said that the panel was more of “bureaucratic” in nature.
Shergill argued that the Panel had been formed to suggest amendment to the laws governing the society which admittedly comprises of nearly 70% of population below 35 years of age however there was not even a single young lawyer or a women social activist on the Panel to present the correct perspective of the society. He held that how the perspective of the youth, social activists and women would be taken and considered to ensure concrete meaningful amendments to the existing laws.
PPCC Legal Cell has announced to launch a toll free number to help Congress workers to report all cases of excess and get on the spot guidelines and legal support. Announcing this Supreme Court lawyer Jaiveer Shergill, who has been appointed Co-chairman of PPCC Legal Cell by PPCC President Captain Amarinder Singh, said that this new facility would be an endeavor to arrest political vendetta as the ruling combine has been slapping false cases against congress workers to harass them.
